SYFY has announced that Season 3 of The Expanse, currently airing on Wednesday nights, will be the last on the network. However, Alcon, the production company behind the television show, is seeking a new home for it. Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment (of which SYFY is a part), said: “The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television. Everyone at SYFY is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson gave the following statement to Deadline, noting the studio will look to find a new home for the series: “We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to SYFY. We respect SYFY’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”  The Expanse premiered in 2015 and has earned widespread critical acclaim. But ratings-wise, the show has declined year-to-year. Season 1 averaged 1.378 million total viewers per episode, Season 2 averaged 1.05 million and Season 3 is averaging around 1 million per episode. For the sake of comparison, Krypton, which airs before before The Expanse on Wednesday nights, averages around 1.85 million viewers per episode. The network noted it only has the rights to the first run, linear television airings of The Expanse. This means that people watching The Expanse on traditional television in traditional timeframes – and not delayed via digital or streaming services (for example, Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available on Amazon Prime) – were critical to the business success of the show for SYFY.
